About Us
History
The idea of AJC Kennels was started in the late 1990's when I was working with
Australian Cattle Dogs (also known as blue heelers) and English Toy Spaniels in
Herding and Agility.
My first pure breed dog was an English Toy Spaniel we named Cricket. She was
intelligent, energetic, and super cute! She was trained by me in agility and though
she never won anything, I still loved her. I also had the chance to own and work
with blue and red heelers. Our first was a feisty male we named Cujeaux
(pronounced Cujo) who was intelligent, loyal, and a real worker with a larger than
life attitude. I trained him in herding for use on my herd of sheep and pigs and he
was trained to pull by my brother. We also had two females, Gypsy and Callie
and I worked with our neighbors ACD Pumkin.
I was also involved with the FFA and 4-H programs and won many awards and
contests through different programs.I have showed and raised many species of
animals including sheep, pigs, cattle, chickens, rabbits, and goats. I participated
in livestock judging (learned some dairy cattle judging) and many speaking and
debate contests. My involvement with those programs has spanned over 12
years and I still like to contribute when possible through helping kids learn to
show or judge or by donating to fund raising events.
I went on to pursue a degree in Animal Science. Currently I have a degree in
Legal Studies and will be looking to finishing the Animal Science degree from
Oregon State University, with an eye to working in Animal Law.
I married James, who is a member of the United States Navy, in 2004 and he
shares my love of dogs and other animals. In 2005 we added a registered Beagle
to our family. He was named AJC's Mulch Diggums, after a dwarf character in
the popular Artemis Fowl book series. He is everything you could want in a dog:
friendly, intelligent, loyal, and willing to work for treats! In 2006, I began showing
Mulch in conformation and by 2007, he had earned his Champion title. We also
added a female Beagle, AJC's Big Bad Lilly Blue, who was full of sass and fire.
Due to a tragic accident, Lilly is no longer with us and we miss her everyday.
Mulch began health testing and failed and we made the decision to remove him
permanently from breeding. He is currently living a fun country life with relatives
and is one happy Beagle.
In the beginning of 2008, it was decided that, as much as we love Beagles, AJC
Kennels needed to move in a new direction. Months of research and study went
into choosing the breed we wanted to work with. We needed a dog who was
people oriented, durable, of medium size, intelligent, loving, athletic, who did not
shed or need extensive grooming and was beautiful. The American Staffordshire
Terrier combines all of those things into one strong graceful package.
In October of 2008 we were given the opportunity to have two of the most
wonderful Amstaff girls enter our lives. Sage and Doodle are from Blu-Mombo
Amstaffs and are co-owned with Brenda Ridall. We could not have asked for
better dogs or a better breeder and can not express enough our joy in having
these two ladies in our family or the experienced help of Blu-Mombo Kennels.
I am the current President of Naples Friends of Animals and through them we
also foster dogs and work on eliminating the stray population where we are
stationed. I am also a full member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.
Future
We will begin showing in Italy in March of 2009 through FCI by way of the ENCI.
(We are not registered FCI, simply showing through them.) Showing in the USA is
planned with no dates currently set. We are also looking to expand our kennels
with the right Amstaffs and will be adding males and females in the future. Health
tests are being conducted and results will be posted as we receive them. We are
also training for other forms of competitions, Doodle will recieve training in
Obedience while Sage will begin Agility training in the Spring of 2009.
